A journey to the inner depths of the canyon offers an opportunity to explore the natural world and one’s self. With a little help from four-legged friends, participants in this mule duffel supported yoga and natural history class descend into the heart of Grand Canyon for a two-night yoga retreat beside picturesque Bright Angel Creek.

We will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the historic Community Building in Grand Canyon Village. After introductions we overview the art of Canyon hiking, health and safety on the trail, and trail etiquette. We'll pack the duffel bags with our overnight gear before embarking on a walk to the Canyon Rim and remarkable Shoshone Point.

After being shuttled to the South Kaibab Trailhead, we descend to Bright Angel Campground near Phantom Ranch. En route we will discuss our surroundings including geology, landscape, and natural history.

Exploratory hikes will help keep our muscles from stiffening up and ease our afternoon yoga session to the beat of the Colorado River. We'll have time to relax and enjoy the scenery.

After breakfast we’ll pack up our gear, review topics we've covered during the last few days, and how best to adapt these principals to hiking in other areas. After our discussion, we will hike out the Bright Angel Trail.

We should be out of the canyon in the mid-afternoon. Once back up on the rim we aim to wrap-up with a yoga session to incorporate the thoughts, topics, and concepts we've covered during the last few days and how best to adapt these principals to seek more meaningful connections to the natural world within our daily lives.

Meet your Grand Canyon experts

Kelley Ingols

Kelley began her yoga teaching career in 2004 after taking a yearlong immersion and teacher training in the Anusara yoga tradition. A schoolteacher by vocation, Kelley quickly became a well-loved yoga teacher in the Grand Canyon community. After six years at the canyon, Kelley moved back to Flagstaff, where she continues to teach yoga at Northern Arizona University and the Yoga Experience.

Kelley’s other loves, community and nature, compel her to bring people to her Grand Canyon backyard to combine yoga and hiking. She has been organizing and leading yoga workshops and retreats at Grand Canyon since 2003. Her classes transform students through the freedom and ease revealed through good alignment and moving from the heart. She loves to make class playful and challenging, and she consistently invites students to embrace their lives as a vehicle to health, happiness, and vitality.

Additional notes

This expedition includes several long hikes. To get the most out of the program, students should be physically fit and enthusiastic about outdoor exploration.
