Volunteer Week 2017
Join your fellow Grand Canyon Association members for an exciting week of volunteer work at Grand Canyon National Park!
Grand Canyon Association is excited to partner with the National Park Service to offer new volunteer opportunities for GCA members. Volunteer activities range from working with vegetation crews to replant native vegetation and remove hazard trees, to working with wildland fire crews to help protect cultural resources by removing fire-prone undergrowth from archaeology sites and other important projects. This challenging program requires volunteers to perform physically demanding work outdoors. The return is the satisfaction of making a positive impact in the park while enjoying Grand Canyon’s spectacular scenery and camaraderie with other GCA members.
Volunteer projects include vegetation rehabilitation and wildfire management activities on both the South and North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Activities may include:
- Helping protect important cultural resources from fire by assisting with fuel reduction activities
- Building burn piles
- Taking pictures of areas of prescription burn areas to compare with historic photos
- Removing non-native plant species
- Planting native plants
- Collecting and cleaning native plant seeds
2017 Volunteer Week Dates, Fees and Physical Requirements:
October 22-28, 2017 - South Rim, Grand Canyon - OPEN - Sign-Up
Accommodations and meals are provided. You must be a Grand Canyon Association member at the $50 level or above and pay an additional $150 participation fee. This fee helps to offset the cost of food and transportation during the work week. The fee is due when you are confirmed for a volunteer week event. If we do not receive the fee within two weeks of your confirmation date your place will be forfeited and offered to the next person on the waiting list. The fee is refundable if you cancel your participation at least 4 weeks before the event.
The work is physically demanding. You will hike on uneven terrain up to a few miles to reach site locations and up and down slopes to reach some sites. These projects may encompass lifting up to 50 lbs., lots of bending/kneeling and working at 7000 ft - 8,000ft - you may notice a shortness of breath. Information about the park can be found at www.nps.gov/grca. Grand Canyon is a dynamic place with unpredictable weather and natural conditions. While volunteer projects are planned to accomplish specific goals, they could be modified or cancelled by the National Park Service at any time.
