The distance from the South Rim to the North Rim varies from half a mile to eighteen miles, and the canyon has a maximum depth of 6,000 feet. The rims' climate is a temperate mountain climate with frequent snows in the winter and thunderstorms throughout the summer. However, one mile lower on the canyon floor, the temperature is often 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit warmer with infrequent rains.
