Orquidia is a Mestiza Indigenous-Salvadoran-American textile artist whose work transforms salvaged cloth and natural dyes into layered fiber art inspired by memory, place, and environmental connection. Drawing from techniques such as embroidery, weaving, and fiber collage, her practice reflects on sustainability, and the relationship between people and landscape.

Inspired by the layered geology and night skies of Grand Canyon, Orquidia’s residency explores how discarded materials can be reimagined into meaningful works of art that honor both personal and shared histories. Additionally, she will offer circular weaving activities for guests during Open Studio hours, inviting visitors to participate in the creative process.

Orquidia Velasquez

Orquidia Velasquez earned an Associate of the Arts degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Orquidia challenges herself as a salvage textile artist, exploring new methods and mediums, such as machine and hand embroidery, knitting, weaving, appliqué, soft-sculpture, fiber-collage, drawing, painting and eco-fabric dyeing to tell colorful stories on the diversity of people. Orquidia will be working with visitors in hands-on fiber art sessions that involve weaving and stitching various aspects of the Grand Canyon environment.
