Under the Rim
Join us for Under the Rim, an Exhibition by current Grand Canyon Conservancy Artist in Residence, Alessandra Vertrees. Created during her 2026 residency, Under the Rim invites visitors to notice the parts of the canyon that often go unseen and unheard: the calls of bats hunting above the rim, the deep history held in the rock, and the river and rail routes that have carried people through this landscape. Through video, audio, maps, and grave etchings, Alessandra Vertrees draws on her family’s roots in nearby Williams, Arizona, to explore how the Grand Canyon, like a family story, holds far more than what first meets the eye.

Alessandra Vertrees
Artist in Residence, 2026Alessandra Vertrees is a multidisciplinary artist, software engineer, and food storyteller with Mexican ancestry. Raised in rural upstate New York and now based in Brooklyn, Alessandra brings both technical fluency and deep cultural inquiry to her work. Her work lives at the intersection of technology, ancestral knowledge, and sensory design. Drawing from her experience growing up on a farm and her background in both generative media and culinary ritual, Alessandra explores how food serves as a vessel for memory, grief, and cultural identity. Her practice uses ingredients, particularly Indigenous plants, as raw material for storytelling, tracing the roots of flavor across time, land, and bloodline.
