At 2am on April 24, 2023, water was released from the bottom of Glen Canyon dam for a high flow experiment on the Colorado River. This coincided with the first night of a 20 day private trip down the Grand Canyon. The Springer expedition had 8 boats and 16 people, most were strangers at the beginning and now friends for life. The average CFS (cubic feet per second) was around 39,500 CFS for 72 hours. The river stayed at about 20,000 CFS for the rest of the trip… This was my first experience down this stretch of the Colorado River and it was a true adventure. Our days on the water were fast and big, the river became unpredictable and wild. I painted everyday, trying to soak in the experience. This collection is a compilation of my favorite gouache studies from the trip, luckily surviving in a dry bag tossed around the boat for twenty days.
