Rebuilding the North Rim

A Vision for Recovery, Resilience & Renewal

Dragon Bravo Fire Star Trails

The Dragon Bravo Fire forever changed the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. While recovery is already underway, this moment presents a rare opportunity—not simply to rebuild what was lost, but to create a stronger, more resilient, and more accessible future for one of America's most beloved landscapes.

Grand Canyon Conservancy is raising funds to support critical recovery projects that will restore infrastructure, improve visitor experiences, preserve historic resources, and create new opportunities for connection and stewardship for generations to come.

Long-range planning is underway with NPS to rebuild visitor services and lodging; however, details are not available yet. Opportunities for public comment on North Rim redevelopment will be available in Fall 2026.

Together, these investments will help ensure the North Rim remains a place of wonder, discovery, and inspiration for generations to come.

Your support can make a transformative difference.

Priority Recovery and Renewal Projects

North Kaibab Trailhead Rehabilitation

Investment Opportunity: $2.8–$4.8 million

The North Kaibab Trail is the only maintained trail from the North Rim into the canyon and serves as the gateway for thousands of hikers, backpackers, and adventurers each year. Yet the trailhead and parking area were never designed for today’s level of use.

On peak days, more than 100 vehicles overflow onto road shoulders, creating safety hazards, damage to resources, and visitor frustration. In one documented instance, parking demand exceeded capacity by 400 percent.

Project Highlights

  • Expanded and redesigned parking
  • Improved traffic circulation and safety
  • Accessible pathways and staging areas
  • Enhanced orientation and educational exhibits
  • Resource protection and reduced roadside impacts
  • Future shuttle integration opportunities

Impact

A reimagined trailhead will create a safer, more welcoming beginning to one of the world's most iconic hiking experiences while protecting fragile North Rim resources and accommodating future visitation.

North Rim Workforce Housing

Investment Opportunity: $4.33 million

Recovery depends on people. The Dragon Bravo Fire resulted in the loss or damage of housing that supported critical staff and operations. Today, limited housing capacity remains one of the biggest barriers to accelerating recovery efforts and maintaining visitor services. This project will construct a new six-unit apartment building designed for year-round occupancy.

Project Highlights

  • Four one-bedroom apartments
  • Two two-bedroom apartments
  • Garage space and winter-ready design
  • Housing for utilities, facilities, emergency services, and administrative staff
  • Capacity to support expanded North Rim operations

Impact

National Park Service housing suffered the majority of losses in the Dragon Bravo Fire, while the concessionaire housing remains untouched. Housing may not be the most visible recovery project, but it is among the most important. Without places for employees to live, restoration projects slow, visitor services suffer, and long-term recovery becomes more difficult. This project directly strengthens the workforce needed to care for the North Rim now and into the future.

Snow Removal Equipment for Year-Round Access

Investment Opportunity: $1.38 million

The North Rim is connected to the outside world by a single road: Highway 67. As recovery work continues, reliable winter access is essential for construction crews, utility restoration, emergency services, and future visitor access. Currently, equipment limitations create vulnerabilities that can delay projects and restrict access.

Project Highlights

  • Highway-grade snowplow
  • Chassis-mounted rotary snow blower
  • Increased redundancy and reliability
  • Support for expanded shoulder-season operations

Impact

This investment helps keep recovery moving regardless of weather. Reliable access means shorter project timelines, improved safety, and a stronger foundation for future expanded North Rim operations and visitation.

North Rim Grand Vision

Investment Opportunity: TBD

The Dragon Bravo Fire created an unprecedented opportunity to think boldly about the future. The North Rim Grand Vision proposes a transformative hub for learning, stewardship, community, and connection. Rather than simply replacing what existed before, this initiative imagines a dynamic campus that inspires visitors while generating sustainable support for the park.

Vision Components

  • Experiential learning center
  • Interactive exhibits and classrooms
  • Night sky observation deck
  • Outdoor amphitheater
  • Expanded artist and scholar residencies
  • Staff and participant housing
  • Retail and operational support facilities

Impact

This visionary project would create new opportunities for education, conservation, arts programming, and visitor engagement while strengthening the North Rim's long-term sustainability and economic vitality.

Preserving History

Recovery is not only about rebuilding infrastructure. It is also about protecting the stories, architecture, and cultural resources that make the North Rim unique. Several historic preservation projects offer meaningful opportunities for donors interested in safeguarding Grand Canyon’s heritage.

North Rim Entrance Cabin

Investment Opportunity: $128,000–$200,000

Built in 1931, this rustic log cabin is a contributing feature of the North Rim Entrance Road Historic District and has long supported park operations and visitor services. Funding will support rehabilitation, flooring replacement, environmental remediation, and preservation of this important historic structure.

Fire Pump Shed Preservation and Interpretation

Investment Opportunity: $108,000–$230,000

Constructed in 1936 after the original Grand Canyon Lodge fire, the Fire Pump Shed represents an important chapter in North Rim history. Funding will support preservation planning, structural stabilization, and interpretive opportunities that help visitors understand the site's significance.

Future Historic Preservation Opportunities

Additional projects currently under development include:

  • Rehabilitation of historic campground comfort stations dating to 1929–1930
  • Stabilization of the historic North Rim stable and corral, one of only three such structures built by the Utah Parks Company across the region

Your Impact

Every gift to North Rim recovery helps create a stronger future for Grand Canyon National Park.

Your investment will:

  • Accelerate recovery following the Dragon Bravo Fire
  • Improve visitor safety and experiences
  • Protect irreplaceable cultural and historic resources
  • Support the workforce needed to care for the park
  • Expand opportunities for education, interpretation, and stewardship
  • Help ensure the North Rim remains accessible and inspiring for future generations

The North Rim has always been a place of resilience. With your support, it can become a model for how we rebuild thoughtfully, sustainably, and with vision. Together, we can help ensure that the North Rim continues to inspire awe, foster stewardship, and connect people to one of the world’s greatest natural and cultural treasures for decades to come.
